Developing the Biofabrication Workforce: Inspire|Build|Grow


Dr. Sangya S. Varma is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Director of Workforce Development at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials (NJCBM) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. As the founding Director of Workforce Development, specifically for the nascent biofabrication industry sector (including additive manufacturing, 3D bioprinting), she has developed, and continues to develop experiential learning and skills training programs. She is the past Director of the Professional Science Masters (PSM) program at Rutgers University that awards the Master of Business & Science (MBS) degree. MBS is a unique degree that combines the science curriculum from a traditional science master’s degree with a specialized set of business+ courses – including business, policy, and law. She is a scientist inventor and innovator with industry experience in translating her discovery into FDA approved and CE marked medical devices. She has also successfully managed several clinical trials including full face transplants. Dr. Varma is an Associate Research Professor at Rutgers University. She received her B.Sc. degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Lucknow University, India; her M.Sc. degree in Organic Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, India; and her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and Polymer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi, USA.
